When you delete a file from your system (and remove it from your Recycle Bin) the contents can still be retrieved by someone who is knows what they're doing - they can even potentially recover data that's been overwritten! Now this doesn't really matter if you're just deleting some unused Word documents, but if you deal with sensitive data such as encrypted information, then it's VERY important that these files be securely deleted...
