The 13th Warrior5.5/10

The 13th Warrior follows a group of 12 warriors (plus Antonio Bandera, who claims to not be a warrior, yet can swing a sword with the best of them) who volunteer for a quest to vanquish a evil force that has taken hold of their homeland. While on the quest, Antonio must learn the language of the northmen (he's supposed to be Arab), learn how to fight, woo the kings daughter, and kill as many baddies as possible.

I went with a group of people, and the general consensus of this movie was that if Conan had strode out onto the battlefield, it wouldn't have been too surprising. It certainly had the same sort of 'epic' feel that Conan had; it didn't get too bogged down in the history of what was going on (or had gone on), it just jumped right into this mythic quest. The story, while not original, wasn't that bad; the biggest mistake was the idea for the baddies in this movie, which are a cross between some jungle tribe and the Inca's... This would be fine if it took place in South America, but they portrayed it as taking place in some nordic country (like Holland), where these people running around with bear skins on and nothing else looked a tad out of place. The scenes with fighting were very well done, and for me were the saving grace of the movie; without them it might very well have been a walkout, so if that isn't something that you like, this is certainly not the movie for you. The movie also had a fair amount of just randomness to it, where they would be discussing something, and then a girl in the background would just chime up with some answer out of left field; uhm, why didn't you mention that BEFORE? Overall, while not a great movie, I wouldn't consider it to be a waste of time to see this movie; although I would recommend waiting for the video.
