Galaxy Quest takes place in a time and place just like today, focusing on the cast of a cult Sci-Fi TV show entitled 'Galaxy Quest' (which is very similar to the original Star Trek series). An alien race intercepts television from Earth for 100 years, and believing that it is historical archives, they come to Earth to enlist the crew to help them defeat an evil alien race.
I went into this movie with relatively low expectations, since most of Tim Allen's other films have not been some of my favorites, although the whole concept of the film sounded intriguing. The movie starts off showing you the relationship of all the cast, their fans, and the lives that they lead; and really helps to make the cast seem much more 'real'. Overall I think all of the actors did a very good job, and were both quirky and believable while still being somewhat similar to their Star Trek counterparts; I thought that Tim Allen, Alan Rickman and Tony Shalhoub stood out the most. The story didn't lag noticeable at any point, and has some very funny and original moments, taking advantage of all the cliche's about hardcore sci-fi fans that we all are aware of - very cool! So, if you're looking for a great comedy to see this weekend, then you won't go wrong with Galaxy Quest; while it's not something that needs to be seen in the theater, I would say that it should be high on the list of rentals when it gets released.
