The Matrix8.5/10

The Matrix is best described as one mans journey into answering the questions "What is the Matrix?" That's about as much as I want to say so that I don't spoil the movie in any way.

I went into this movie hoping that it would be ok, expecting it to be disappointed, and surprised at how good it was! I think it's very difficult to really do a good Sci-Fi movie, not just because you need to develop a compelling story, but also because you need to create a world, that for all intensive purposes doesn't exist, and make that believable as well. Many films do this by subtle hinting at differences, like most indie films, while the more common Hollywood effects orgy is more akin to being slugged by a mallet. This movie is a very interesting hybrid of the two... There's quite a bit going on behind the scenes, that you're aware of, but not privy to; and there's also enough computer generated carnage to make even the most avid CG addicts satiated. This movie also using a variation of the dreaded stop-motion camera (it's actually very very slow motion), but it actually fits in with the store, instead of being some sort of "Hey, can you do that thing in that shampoo commercial." All of the actors did a great job, especially the two stars, who were both very believable as kick-butt martial artists, which was a surprise. Bottom line, if you like Sci-Fi flicks, or just plain old action, then this is a big winner.
