'The Mummy', starring Brendan Fraser, from such hideous movies as 'George of the Jungle' and 'Encino Man', plays the lead role in this 1999 remake of the classic horror movie 'The Mummy'. Set in 1920's Egypt, the movie has been described as similar to the original Indiana Jones with graphics from ILM that "bring the awe-inspiring and terrifying world of The Mummy to life"... Sure, that's a whole lotta hype, but did they pull it off...?
You might guess from my little intro there that I didn't like this movie, and if you did, you're WRONG! heheh, look at the rating first next time :) I went into this movie with pretty low expectations - I've yet to see another 'Indiana Jones' that was even close, and the thought of the guy who plays some of the most moronic characters in film history being cast as in the hero role certainly did nothing to dissuade me from this view. And with ILM busy with Star Wars, how much time could they really put into this? Somehow I visualized a copy of Lightwave running on a Video Toaster, back in some dusty closet there - boy was I wrong! The computer graphics aspect of this film was really top notch, based heavily in particle effects for bugs crawling around, bee's flying, or sandstorms. The initial scene at the beginning of the movie set back in ancient Egypt was very well thought out and implemented in a very tight manner. Enough of the effects thought, the acting was very good as well; I must say that Brandon Fraser did a great job in kind of capturing that haphazard feel that the original Indiana Jones, without feeling like it was a ripoff. Overall the casting was excellent in this flick, all of the people looked like you thought they should, and the range of characters helped it get that kind of tongue and cheek comedy that present in Indy as well. But for all it's similarities with Indiana Jones, it certainly is a different kind of movie, and has enough variations to make it quite enjoyable (the chair scene is a classic!). If you're looking for a good action movie, loaded with special effects, that doesn't take itself too seriously, then you won't be disappointed!
