Star Trek: Insurrection is the third 'Trek movie to star the cast from the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation. The story takes place on a remote planet hidden inside a nebula, where a small group of people live in a venerable utopia. Of course, a group of evil face-lift aliens want to steal the planets utopia-radiation for their own fiendish plots; the catch? The Federation supports the plan!
I'm a fan of Star Trek, so I always go into the movies with relatively high expectation, but I try to temper them, since I really haven't thought that any of the movies were really that special. Well, this one is no different. While it isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, it doesn't really have anything that set it apart either. The special effects are very well done, with nice particle systems, and wierd camera shots, and little caterpillar-like rendered bug things; so you won't be disappointed on that front. The pacing is ok; it lags in the middle, but picks up at the end, so you don't leave thinking 'why the hell did I see this?', which is a welcomed chance since you could always be suffering through that one Star Trek with the whales... Yuk! Basically, it's easy to summarize this movie as a decent episode from the series; nothing you'd talk to you friends about, but not a complete waste of time either. I think that the Star Trek franchise is in a real sticky position, it's a great franchise, with lots of loyal viewer who will go to see just about anything with the logo in the ads, but the problem is that with a new movie every two years, it's soon for you to have forgotten the interplay between the characters, and late for you to get that episodal feeling. Overall, if you're a Trekkie, or even a casual fan, and have a couple of hours to blow, you probably won't be disappointed. Token link going out to something having to do with this
